Want to join the L Train Brass Band? Here’s what you need to know!
What instruments do you accept?
Our instrumentation consists of clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, mellophones, and tubas. If you’re a percussion player, please contact drumline@ltrainbrass.com.
What do I need to bring?
We ask that you bring your own instrument and recommend bringing a music stand or phone lyre. Don’t own your own instrument? Email membership@ltrainbrass.com and we may be able to help. Access to sheet music will be provided after joining.
What skill level do I need to be in L Train?
L Train Brass welcomes musicians at a variety of skill levels! We have experienced players fresh out of college bands and drum corps right next to people who haven’t picked up a horn in 30 years. You must be able to read sheet music and be comfortable playing your instrument (we do not offer lessons).
Vaccinations required
In an effort to keep the band and community safe, all members must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Who can join?
Anyone age 21 or over in the New York area can be in L Train!
Where and when do you rehearse?
The band rehearses every Sunday from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM at Culture Lab LIC in Long Island City, Queens. Your section leader will give you specific instructions on how to find us upon joining. We recommend that members come to at least two rehearsals before any performance. Some shows/performances will have other specific requirements.
Is there a cost to join the band?
L Train members pay dues of $6.95 a month. As a nonprofit organization, any money made by the band at gigs or events goes to keeping the train rolling, not to the individual members.
Does the band travel?
We travel to New Orleans for a long weekend every year for a parade and other performances in the season leading up to Mardi Gras! Our other performances throughout the year are in the New York area.
Why join?
Community, cool opportunities, a chance to play your instrument, friends, and fun!
